Buying 20 Foot Extension
Ladders: Tips
Before you buy one of the many 20-foot extension
ladders you need to make sure that's the height you really need. A 20-foot
extension ladder will not actually let you safely reach 20 feet, and therefore
may not be the right buy for your project.
If this is a project for your home and that home is more than two stories high -
even if only 2 1/2 stories - you're not necessarily going to be able to buy one
extension ladder, 20 foot or otherwise, and get the job done. If you buy a
20-foot extension ladder that is not adjustable it will be too long for any jobs
that require a shorter ladder.
Besides 20-foot extension ladders you can find other heights as well, such as 16
or 24 feet. The 16-foot collapsible aluminum ladders are made of two eight-foot
tall sections that have been combined securely. This is the reason that a
20-foot extension ladder won't reach 20 feet. For safety reasons, the mated
parts of the extension ladder must overlap somewhat. So two 10-foot extension
ladders together may have half an inch of each together, which eliminates half a
foot in height. Nor can you stand at the exact top of the ladder. There's no
rung there.
If you need to reach nine feet high, you actually need a 16-foot extension
ladder. When fully extended this ladder will only be at 13 feet, but the highest
level at which you can stand safely is 9 feet 2 inches. If you need to be able
to stand 20 feet off the ground you'll need to buy a 28-foot extension ladder,
which reaches 25 feet and lets you safely stand 20 feet 10 inches off the
ground.
