Ladder Safety Tips
There are three types of portable ladders: the
Industrial type which can carry less than 250 pounds in weight; Commercial for
not more than 220 pounds of load; and Household for 200 pounds of load. Learning
about ladder safety tips and how to maintain it is important because it is
commonly used for most household chores and can be the cause of an accident if
you do not follow the instructions.
The stepladder is the most common ladder found in many homes. Ladders are
commonly made of wood, aluminum and fiberglass. When it comes to durability,
aluminum is the best but it conducts electricity making it unsafe if you are
dealing with electricity. Wood rots over time. Fiberglass is the safest ladder
to use because it is both durable and non-conductive but it is the most
expensive.
In maintaining your ladders, you should inspect it regularly for frozen or
broken latches or joints. Inspect aluminum ladders for broken welds and cracks
and rough spots before using. Inspect wooden ones for rots, splinters and
cracks. Check for loose and broken parts. Use clear sealant or linseed oil to
protect wood ladders. Painting wooden ladders is not recommended because it may
hide cracks and rots.
Ladder safety tips include: making sure that your ladder is suitable for the
type of job you intend to do as mentioned above. Inspect it for broken joints
and cracks especially if it has been stored for a while. Be sure to place it on
a flat, even, and stable surface and never place it on top of any other object.
Additional ladder safety suggestions include, make sure to fasten tall ladders
to prevent movement. Always face the ladder when climbing or when going down.
You should also keep both feet together. One foot should not be on one step and
the other foot on a different step. Do not stand on the stepladders paint shelf.
If you have a belt knuckle, keep it between the rungs to avoid clamping. Kids
love to play on ladders so do not leave them unattended. And most importantly,
use one made of fiberglass or wood when dealing with electricity.
