PVC Pool Ladder Painting Tips

Painting a pool ladder is a challenge. Different techniques and paints are used for every kind of ladder material. For every kind of material such as metal, wood or PVC pool ladder, there are available painting options. The ladder will surely stay painted and sealed for several years if proper application is rendered.

Waterproof paints are used for those ladder materials that are always wet or submerged under water. Each type of material requires a different painting procedure and waterproof paint. For waterproofing, epoxy paints are usually used. Latex and acrylic paints may also be used but not all types of ladder materials can be painted with acrylic paint.

For metal ladders, epoxy paint that is marine-grade is the best choice. A metal material is hard to paint because its surface is smooth and it does not have the capability of taking in a liquid or a porous surface. Without priming, marine-grade epoxy paints can be applied. These paints create a hard bond on the metal surface without cracking. Use solvent free epoxy paint for a most water resistant and long-lasting finish. The paint can be applied with paint brush and you should let the paint dry for 48 hours before using.

Plastic or PVC pool ladders are hard to paint because the material contracts and expands with air temperature making it difficult for the paint to stick. There are spray paints especially made for plastic materials that have ingredients that can add texture to plastics to reduce surfaces that are slippery for safety. Spray over the plastic ladder and leave it for 24 hours before applying another coat.

Wood ladders have the tendency to rot rather than metal or plastic; therefore, the need for waterproofing is greater. To prevent seeping of water into the wood, an epoxy primer is used. After priming, any water proof paint compatible for a wood material or PVC pool ladder should be used. Just apply it using a paint brush and let it dry for 2 days before using.
