Sliding Attic Ladder: Tips and Advice
The family has grown and the house is mighty
small but wait; you could expand into the attic.
Turn your attic into a play area, extra bedroom, work or storage space. It may
be the perfect solution to your space problem and all you will need is a little
remodeling and a sliding attic ladder.
You could use stairs but there are advantages to installing an attic ladder that
slides instead. This type of attic ladder will keep the landing clear of
obstruction and it will take up no floor area.
When you use this kind attic ladder it may not be quite as compact as a
concertina ladder but the attic ladder that slides will have handrails and is
easier to operate. You will find that this type of attic ladder is safe and
convenient.
An attic ladder that slides is fully retractable. To operate this kind of attic
ladder you simply use a hand-held rod to push the condensed ladder around a
pivot point. You also will use the hand-held rod to close the loft hatch.
If you have the attic ladder installed for you the ladder will require adequate
clearance and it will be important that the hatch area is sound. It is
recommended that the hatch area be insulated because this creates a thermal
barrier that will help in retaining heat between the other living areas of the
house and the loft area.
The perimeter around the loft access can also be sealed with an air seal gasket.
When an air seal is installed it will create a tight fit and this will eliminate
any heat loss and prevent drafts.
A sliding attic ladder is just what you need when converting an attic space into
a useable part of your house.
